Kia has launched a groundbreaking car accessory made from plastic extracted from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The new trunk liner for the upcoming EV3 model marks a major step in Kia's partnership with The Ocean Cleanup, showcasing the company's commitment to sustainable mobility solutions.
The limited-edition trunk liner, available in select markets, incorporates 40% recycled ocean plastic alongside other materials. It features a 'geometric wave' pattern inspired by Kia's 'Opposites United' design philosophy, reflecting the ocean cleanup process. The accessory maintains the durability and functionality of conventional trunk liners while including a QR code for product information transparency.
Eco-Friendly Production and Future Goals
Kia's process for creating the trunk liner involves rigorous sorting, recycling, and processing of ocean plastic to meet quality standards. The recycled material undergoes a Chain of Custody Standard verification to ensure traceability and material integrity.
Charles Ryu, Executive Vice President at Kia, emphasized the company's commitment to environmental stewardship, stating, "This partnership is not only a testament to our shared commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation, but a worldwide movement to create cleaner, healthier oceans for future generations."
As part of its sustainability initiatives, Kia aims to increase the use of recycled plastic in its vehicles to over 20% by 2030. The company has already incorporated recycled materials in models like the EV6 and EV9, using recycled fishnets for flooring and plastic bottles for seat fabrics.
Boyan Slat, CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, praised the collaboration, saying, "We are so grateful to have a visionary and passionate partner in Kia, who shares our vision of ensuring that the plastic we extract from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is given a new life in sustainable items."
While the EV3 model has not yet been launched in Canada, more information about its availability will be provided closer to the release date. Contact our dealership today to stay informed about Kia's latest eco-friendly advancements and upcoming vehicles.
